LAST 4 CRABHOURS

The Prismaticrab Pin Kickstarter ends in ~4 hours!!

image

Look at all these lovely crabs we’ve unlocked in the last 2 weeks, lol…

image

The one I was hoping for most was agender pride crab so I’m glad I got what I wanted XD Unlocked crabs are available at every tier once they’ve been accessed, so if you wanna add a specific little guy to your pin collection, now is your last chance~

The KS ends at 1230PST, thank you very much for looking and helping me create some tiny scuttling Guys!

I’m running a very very short and sweet Kickstarter called Prismaticrab! to celebrate CRABS, because… (crabs)

This is my first serious pin Kickstarter so I am going a bit batshit. All of the original designs can be evolved into different colors, which makes sense because LOOK AT THEM. Look at my tiny evolved children

image

There’s still some unlocks to go, but we’ve got a ton opened up now, and some free upgrades as well~

Check out all my colorful dumbass babies HERE

Quail Party season!

I did a Twitter thread last week, but figured I’d do a post here too because… it’s the start of the hatching season!

image

(pictured above: 7 day-old baby quails hanging out in their brooder)

Last year I crowdfunded a self pubbed book, Quail Party, which is 100% quail propaganda cuz I love them. The book is done now!! and I’ve have had so much fun building my own flock that I’ve made it my mission to obnoxiously shove them/ my quail guide in everyone’s face as much as possible, lol. Below I’m gonna post some pages from the book to pique some interest in folks who don’t already know how fun and accessible Japanese Coturnix quails can be!!

First, unlike chickens, quail require a LOT less space and resources, and if you don’t have a large garden, can be easily kept in smaller spaces like sideyards, porches, and even apartments.

(pictured above: pages from Quail Party with FAQ about quails, and info about keeping quails vs keeping chickens)

They’re also pretty easy to get your hands on. You can buy them as eggs and hatch them, or simply order live birds locally or in the mail. The book goes into detail about both methods, especially hatching.

The adult birds are, generally speaking, just a delight to own and raise. My current flock is 2 males and 9 females who live in a large aviary, and they pretty much just chill all day. My oldest quail will turn 1 year old next month! They don’t fight, don’t make any noticeable noise, and due to the hardiness of this breed, haven’t had any serious issues at all (since they are very pampered and spoiled and have the best food and snacks and vitamins available). They are, simply, potatoes, and I love them a lot.

(pictured above: pages from Quail Party with info about quail behavior)

The guide is 80 pages so there’s a lot more on everything you’d need to know about quails; from egg and feather varieties, how to give them a healthy space to live, how to set up an automated DIY habitat for them so you don’t have to do much every day but collect eggs, how to protect them from predators, how to give them snacks and nutrients… even a simple egg recipe section lol. Oh and some comics too cuz. Comics.

Anyways, if you want to know more about the Magical World of Quails and maybe try out quails for yourself (or foist them on a friend) this spring season, feel free to check out the Quail Party guide digitally or grab one of my last copies of the physical book.

Thanks for reading :}

Quail Party! 600% funded and Kickstarting until Oct 14~

(& shipping in November)

I realize I have basically not really promo’d this end-of-year project at all outside of Twitter, but I’m Kickstarting a manual to help others achieve what I did this year, which is: raising a quail army.

image

I really love keeping quails and harvesting eggs daily, and it’s a LOT more cost-efficient and easy to do than you’d think. Quail can be kept in places where chickens might not be allowed, and are just really cute :’}

image
image

The book is 80 illustrated pages of information about raising the domesticated Japanese Coturnix Quail (Coturnix japonica) for pleasure and as a low-maintenance food source. It’s silly and easy to read and IDK. I had a major death in my life last November and was in a really bad place until spring of this year, when I began my quail journey. Relearning to build, hatch, grow, and care for something really got me back on track after all the pain. Keeping quail really helped me relearn how to appreciate life, and I wanted to share that feeling!

image

The project is fully funded, but I’m trying to push for a stretch goal to add a bonus sticker sheet to all the physical book orders, so I figure I’d sneak back here to help achieve that.

The book SHOULD also be shipping out several weeks before the 2021 holidays, so that’s another nice thing. There might be some delays just due to USPS being hamstrung by its own leadership but, doing my best to get these into hands in December. Feels good to be making stuff again finally.

But yeah thanks for taking a look!!!!

Find the project here until Thursday, October 14

Finally hitting the last day of this project campaign!! If you’d like a copy of Quail Party, now’s the time to back :] Thanks for looking!

Just another post as I wrap up Quail Party! I 1) needed a few more individuals for my flock since I gave some quail to my brother and 2) I needed to fill some gaps in my knowledge, so I recently did a hatch to achieve those goals. I also learned about a few things I haven’t encountered before- in this case, a hatchling with Splay Leg.

Splay leg is a condition that can affect newborn birds and cause them to be unable to stand on their legs. The legs become jutted out to the side, somewhat froglike.

image

If left untreated, the splay can become permanent and render the adult quail unable to walk, scratch, and access food and water effectively. It is caused by happenstance or inappropriate rearing substrate, but my other quail have been fine on it so I think it was just this little guy having issues. So yesterday was rehab day. First I tried The Band

image

Basically a produce rubber band with a sticking plaster wrapped around it. HOWEVER: the chick was so goddamn wiggly. It’s like, an inch across and delicate as hell and won’t stop moving. It took 2 people multiple attempts over 2 hours and we couldn’t get it on the chick and didn’t want to stress it out further lol. So we switched to shot glass:

image

He got the glass for 20 mins at a time to force him to exercise his leg muscles. That, and lots of food to build muscle too. Baby quail eat minimum 30% protein feed and grow very quickly, so I was hoping I had treated it early enough that he would just outgrow the issue in a day or two…

And this morning! Looking really good :]

image

He’s standing, walking around, and even running, I’m so happy!!! I’ll keep monitoring him but, I saw him eating a ton of food this morning which will help reinforce his growing leg muscles, so I think he will be okay.

Raising quails is extremely fun and rewarding. If you’d like to consider raising some quails of your own, check out Quail Party! It covers everything you need to know about obtaining or hatching your own quail, providing a nice home for them, caring for their needs, and harvesting eggs. You can find some preview pages from the book on my Twitter, and a fully documented demo of the recent hatch in the backer updates.

Sorry for RTing this huge post again, but wanted to say thanks for looking and supporting QUAIL PARTY! Due to interest, I was able to justify an minimum order of stickers, so every physical book order regardless of tier now gets a complimentary quail sticker sheet to go with it~

one more photo for the road (a pic of one of my quails, about 1 day after hatching) (if you like hatching quails btw, take a look in the backer-only updates on the project for some fun stuff)
